Wonderfully Guitar Co for Vets

July 15th, 2010 No comments

I just found out about a wonderful organization In May of 2007 Patrick Nettesheim was teaching Dan Van Buskirk his guitar lesson when they started chatting about how much playing the guitar has helped Dan manage his Vietnam born PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Dan felt that it gave him focus and a great sense of happiness. The two thought that other Vets with PTSD might also benefit from learning guitar. What a cool idea!

This is a non-profit organization so they rely on donations and help from others. if you like to help visit their web site at: http://guitars4vets.org

New Video Game Uses Real Guitar

June 10th, 2010 No comments

powergig_logoI don’t know about you but playing Guitar Hero is allot of fun but also is a frustrating experience because I can actually play a real guitar much better that the mock guitar controller.  A new game will be coming out that hopefully will fix this issue. It’s called Power Gig: Rise of the SixString.

Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews Band, and Kid Rock have entered into agreements with Seven45 Studios to provide songs for this system. This new video game uses a functioning six-string electric guitar for the controller!

The guitar features Seven45′s proprietary technology that can distinguish and recognize gamers’ input all along the guitar, making the guitars as easy to pick up and play as any other band-game button controllers. They also include all the guts of an electric guitar so players can plug it into any standard amp.

Power Gig also introduces the option to switch on chording, which presents the added challenge of playing the game using chords that require specific finger placement on the strings. As players progress through the game, becoming more comfortable with a genuine guitar and potentially choosing to play real power chords, they will find that the byproduct of playing the game is coming away from it with an understanding of real guitar fundamentals.

This sounds very exciting to me and may be a good way to have fun playing a game and also learn how improve your guitar playing at the same time!

The game will be available for the PlayStation and Xbox 360 this October. Learn more at powergig.com.

Ronnie James Dio Passed Away

May 19th, 2010 2 comments

dioSad news, singer Ronnie James Dio passed away on May 16 from stomach cancer at age 67. I always loved Dio’s strong, mean voice.

When Ozzy Osborne was fired from Black Sabbath in 1979, Mr. Dio replaced him, and by 1983 he released the album “Holy Diver” with his own band, Dio. If you never heard this album it worth checking it out. Vivian Campbell’s guitar work and Dio’s voice were quite a pair. The band Dio, in various lineup configurations continued to release material in the mid-2000s.

In 2006 he began playing with some of his former band mates in Black Sabbath, naming the group Heaven and Hell after the title of the first Black Sabbath album on which Mr. Dio appeared. Heaven and Hell released one album, “The Devil You Know,” in 2009.

The Musicians First Aid Kit

April 27th, 2010 No comments

Gigging is probably one of the most enjoyable activities a musician can experience. There is always something special about performing in front of a live audience. The sound of a crowds appreciation when you have just ripped up the stage with a great performance of your best tunes. There is just nothing like it.

But what happens when things don’t go exactly as planed? And what happens when things fail miserably? If you have ever gigged I am sure you are familiar with Murphy law: If things can go wrong, they probably will. I have had experiences like: amps blowing up, guitar strings breaking, stolen fuses in my amp, bad cords, out of tune guitars, ect…

These things happen to all bands and what makes the difference between a professional and an amateur is how you deal with these problems. You need to do some preplanning and put together a a Musicians First Aid Kit. When a problem does occur, you will be prepared to quickly fix the problem and get on with your show.

Guitar/Bass Strings
Get at least one extra set for each guitar or bass you have at the gig. If you pop a string you will be prepared to replace it. Remember this golden rule for guitars and basses: Never step on stage without a properly tuned backup guitar or bass. If you have any problems with your main ax all you have to do is pick up your backup and fix the problem on your next break.

Cords
Get a complete second set of cords. This includes patch cords and mike cables.

Batteries
Go through all of your gear and make a note of all of the batteries you use. Get backups for everything and make sure the backups don’t sit and go dead before you replace them. Consider some type of preventative maintenance schedule so you can keep track how long batteries are in use and when they need replacement. Don’t forget about the guitar tuner!

Fuses
Again go through all of your gear and make a note of all the proper sizes of your fuses. Get some type of small segregated box and label the top with the current ratings for the fuses (1A, 5A ect…). Never put a fuse that has a higher current rating in your amp or gear. There is a reason the manufacture put that size fuse in your system. Never, Never wrap a fuse with tin foil to bypass it! If your fuses keeps blowing, you have a short in this gear and by putting a larger fuse or bypassing it all together you may completely blow it up which will will cost you plenty to repair. Also I should mention that by bypassing your fuse you run the risk of electrocuting yourself! Never under any circumstances bypass your fuses!

Amps
If you use an amp in your performance and it fails what could you do? A small spare is a good idea. Guitar players can use a guitar processor as a backup amp and it can be plugged directly into the PA. Again I know this wont sound perfect but it will get you through the gig. Bass players have it easy if their amps go out. Plug directly into the PA. If you play bass you may want to consider buying a direct box specifically for that purpose. Same goes for keyboard players, plug directly into the PA with a DI box

All Bands
Always have plenty of duct tape! This stuff can get you out of some major jams!

I have not covered everything that can go wrong with your gear at a show but hopefully this will spark some ideas of the things that you can do if your gear fails. Put together your Musicians First Aid Kit in some sort of tool box or fishing tackle box. If you are prepared when things go wrong at your gigs (and believe me they will) it is no big deal. If you are not prepared you will look like an amateur and remember you never know who is out in the audience watching. Good luck and happy gigging!

The Allman Brothers Band Museum

April 26th, 2010 No comments

theboghouselogoI just found out about the Allman Brothers Band museum. It’s in Georgia and looks like a real cool place to go visit. Here is some info about the museum:

In the early 1970s, the Grand Tudor-style mansion at 2321 Vineville Avenue in Macon, Georgia served as the communal hub around which the family and musical world of the Allman Brothers Band revolved.  With three stories, 6,000-square-feet, 18 rooms, a spacious kitchen, glorious bay windows and an inviting front porch, it became known as the “Big House.”

The members of the band and its extended family turned it into a home filled with love, friendship and brotherhood.  They lived there, rehearsed there, wrote some of their most classic songs there, raised their children there.  It was their castle, their sanctuary.

Now the house where it all began will preserve the history and legacy of the Allman Brothers Band through the efforts of the Big House Foundation, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit public charity formed several years ago by a group of friends and fans who wanted to insure that generations to come would know about the band’s pivotal place in music and social history.

The Foundation’s vision is to transform the Big House into a world-class, interactive museum where visitors can explore the world’s largest collection of Allman Brothers Band memorabilia….sit on the front porch where Duane Allman and Berry Oakley spent countless hours together….walk up the same steps that Butch Trucks, Jaimoe and Chuck Leavell once did…and tour the house that inspired Gregg Allman to write “Please Call Home.”

evolution-guitar-1931-1947-300x152I found this cool graphic of the evolution of the guitar. It’s pretty cool! It shows the guitar starting back in 1931 and gives details all the way up through 2008 and the guitar hero controller. Its a pretty large graphic file so please be patient if you try to download.

Click Here to download the full size image (right click and save target as to save to your PC, then you can blow it up with a graphic program).

Kid Rock on Illegal Downloading Music

April 15th, 2010 No comments

Check out this video of Kid Rock talking about illegal downloads of music. He obviously is being very sarcastic but he does bring up a good point. Most people wouldn’t even think twice about stealing gas, an Ipod, a PC, a car, or clothes. It’s just something you don’t do. Then why is music anything different?

I personally know how much work goes into learning how to play an instrument, writing good music and recording it so it rocks. Not an easy thing to and I believe that an artist should be paid for all of their hard work. When you can now go to ITunes and pay $1 per song there is simply no excuse not to pay for music.

That’s my opinion and I would like to hear what you have to say about illegal downloads by adding a comment to this post after you watch the video.
